The Tax and Customs Administration has taken the option to look up the assessment number using the payment reference off its website.

The reason for this is that, in some cases, the tax assessment number contains the citizen service number (BSN). Allowing users to look up the assessment number would therefore contravene privacy regulations. This means that a simple way of using a payment to trace which assessment or tax return had been paid is no longer available. However, alternatives have already emerged online.
Look up payment reference
It is still possible to do this via the Tax and Customs Administration’s website, using the Search Help: Payment Reference, to look up the payment reference using the tax assessment or tax return number. The search function cannot be used to find the payment reference that must be used when making repayments on coronavirus-related debts. The Tax and Customs Administration has published this payment reference in the letter informing the taxpayer of the amount of the monthly repayment instalments.
