Deadline gift tax return 2024: by 1 March 2025

The deadline for submitting the gift tax return 2024 is fast approaching. Have you received a gift in 2024 that exceeds the general exemption or uses a special exemption? If so, your gift tax return must be filed before 1 March 2025 have been received by the tax authorities. In this article, we explain when to file a tax return, what exemptions apply and what to look out for.

When should you file gift tax returns?

You are required to file a gift tax return if you received a gift above the general exemption limits in 2024. The exemptions vary by situation.

The following exemptions apply for 2024:

  • Parent to child: €6,633;
  • Gifts to others (e.g. grandchildren or friends): €2,658.

Did you receive a higher amount than these exemptions? Then you have to pay gift tax on the excess and before 1 March 2025 report.

Rates

To the extent that the amount received by virtue of gift exceeds the exemption, the following rates apply.

Up to an amount (after deducting the exemption) of €152,368 (2025: € 154.197) pay:

- the partner and children10%
- (great) grandchildren18%
- other recipients30%

On the amount of the acquisition in excess of €152,368 (2025: € 154.197) pay:

- the partner and children20%
- (great) grandchildren36%
- other recipients40%

How to file a tax return?

You can file a tax return via the website of the Tax and Customs Administration by logging in with your DigiD. Would you prefer a paper tax return? Then you can download the gift tax return form and send it by post.

What if you are late?

If you fail to file your tax return on time, the tax authorities can impose a fine. The default penalty is €469 but rises to €6,709 if you are more often in default. It is therefore wise to file the tax return on time.
