VWG and your government message box

You can find this factsheet in PDF format here.

The government has posted the following on its website www.mijnoverheid.nl Your personal digital mailbox has been set up and, in due course, all communication will be channelled through it message box let it run its course.

Even if you have VWG handle all your financial and tax affairs, it is a good idea to activate your message box, for two reasons.

  1. In the message box, you will also receive messages from the government regarding matters other than financial and tax-related issues.
  2. VWG does not receive all relevant financial and tax documents directly from the government.

DigiD

You can access your personal inbox using your DigiD. If you don’t have a DigiD yet, you can create one at www.digid.nl. To do this, follow the steps set out on this website.

Your DigiD is your strictly personal access code to the information made available digitally by the government. It is therefore advisable not to give your DigiD to anyone.

What information does VWG actually receive directly (digitally) from the government?

  • All provisional and final assessments for income tax, income-related contributions under the Health Insurance Act and corporation tax (electronic assessments).
  • The details from the pre-filled tax return (VIA).

Authorisation

VWG will only receive this information if you have given your consent.

Electronic attacks

For electronic tax assessments, this is a continuous authorisation. The Tax and Customs Administration will ask you every few years whether you wish to renew this authorisation; if you do not respond to this request, the authorisation will continue to apply.

VIA

To apply for the VIA, you’ll need to contact us annually authorise. You will receive a letter from the Tax and Customs Administration containing a verification code. We can use this verification code to retrieve your pre-filled details from the Tax and Customs Administration.

The VIA often does not contain all the information needed to complete your income tax return correctly. And the Tax and Customs Administration emphasises that you are personally responsible for the accuracy of the information included in your return. You must therefore check the VIA details yourself or have them checked.

Our advice

  • Please log in to your message box and send us the information that we do not receive directly, so that we can check it.
  • Please send us the activation code for your VIA every year, but do make sure you gather all the information relevant to your tax return.
