On Sunday 13 January, true Nijmegen braves will be challenged to complete a gruelling course from the Waalkade to the Grote Markt and back again. The proceeds of the run will go towards the realisation of the statue \u2018De Kaaisjouwer\u2019. <\/strong><\/p>\n

The course has a total length of 2.5 kilometres and must be completed several consecutive times with a five-, 10- or 15-kilogram jute bag. Parts of the tough course include the Voerweg, the Lieve Vrouwentrapppen, and of course the Veerpoort stairs. The one with the most laps within the stipulated time wins the title \u2018Kaaisjouwer 2019\u2019.<\/p>\n

The Kaaisjouwer Run is organised by Agency X and is also an initiative of the Rijk van Nijmegen Culture Fund and City Bootcamp. The proceeds of the run will go towards the realisation of the three-metre tall statue \u2018De Kaaisjouwer\u2019. The sculpture will stand in the Waalhaven near the Bastei and is a design by Margriet Hovens.<\/p>\n

The sculpture \u2018De Kaaisjouwer\u2019 is a tribute to all the hauliers who unloaded ships at the Waalkade over the years. Until the 1960s, ships on the Nijmegen quay were unloaded by hand. Loads weighing up to eighty kilograms were lifted from the ship's holds to the Grote Markt.<\/p>\n

When registering for the run, a distinction is made between professional and recreational Kaaisjouwers. This is because you get to decide the weight of the bag. Also, there are only a limited number of starting numbers available, so sports enthusiasts should register quickly. In any case, we are running with some colleagues on 13 January.
