From 3 January 2018, new rules will apply to companies or legal entities that invest through a financial institution. From that date onwards, you will only be able to carry out transactions if you have an LEI number. What exactly is an LEI and how do you apply for one?<\/p>\n

Who does the legislation apply to?<\/h4>\n

LEI<\/strong> means Legal Entity Identifier<\/strong> and is a unique identifier for a company or legal entity that holds or trades in shares, bonds or derivatives. In Europe, an LEI has been mandatory since 3 January 2018 for legal entities with a securities account at a financial institution. Without an LEI, they will no longer be able to carry out any buying or selling transactions after that date. In practice, it is not always clear to some organisations whether this requirement also applies to them. Not sure? You can easily check with your bank or financial adviser to see if you need an LEI.<\/p>\n

Why will an LEI soon be compulsory?<\/h4>\n

An LEI is an internationally standardised code that enables financial regulators (such as the Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets) to monitor transactions worldwide and intervene in good time if necessary. It is intended to make financial markets more transparent, ensure better risk management and thus offer investors greater protection.<\/p>\n

Applications and fees<\/h4>\n

In the Netherlands, an LEI is issued and registered by the Chamber of Commerce. You can only apply for the number if you are registered in the Commercial Register and have a Chamber of Commerce number. On kvk.nl<\/a> You can then complete a digital LEI application form. The one-off registration fee is \u20ac65 excluding VAT. The LEI is valid for one year from the date of issue. The fee for the annual renewal of the LEI is \u20ac40 excluding VAT.<\/p>\n
